HISTORY OF IGSSA

The Independent Girls Schools Sports Association (IGSSA) WA was established in 1963 with its first Athletics Carnival at Perry Lakes Stadium. It was created to organize interschool sporting competitions for girls from independent schools in Western Australia, fostering teamwork, skill development, and athletic excellence.

Key Milestones:

1965: First Interschool Swimming Meet at Beatty Park Aquatics Centre.

1967: A constitution was formalized, and the association was renamed the Independent Girls Schools Sportsmistresses Association.

1970s: Regular interschool competitions began, including annual Swimming and Athletics Carnivals and round-robin tournaments in Tennis, Netball, Hockey, and Softball.

1980s: Basketball (1976), Gymnastics (1979), and Cross Country (1982) were introduced. A review in 1985 led to the association’s renaming as IGSSA WA Incorporated.

1996: John XXIII College (formerly Loreto) withdrew from IGSSA Sport, but remained as a member of IGSSA Rowing

2002-2005: Santa Maria College joined IGSSA in a staged process over 3 years

2007–2008: In 2007 Year 7 students were included in Swimming, Athletics, and Cross Country competitions, and then included in all IGSSA sports in 2008. Soccer was introduced as an IGSSA Sport in 2007, replacing Gymnastics which was removed in 2008.

2010–2022: Water Polo (2010), Golf (2016) and AFL (2022) were introduced. Cricket (2014) and Badminton (2019) were included as social events.

IGSSA WA continues to evolve, offering exposure to a diverse range of sporting opportunities to foster lifelong engagement with sport.

Any other awards for individual performances in Team and Carnival Sports are managed independently by member schools who have their own criteria for the awarding of sport participation and excellence.
